Pools & hot tubs: questions to ask before you hire
Pools and hot tubs come with safety rules and ongoing upkeep. Ask about both before you sign.
For pools & hot tubs
- Will I need a permit, and what fencing or cover does the city require around a pool?
- What electrical work is needed, and who does it?
- What are the yearly running and upkeep costs?
- Do you offer service, opening and closing, and repairs after it's in?
- What warranty covers the shell, the equipment and your work?
Ask every contractor
- Do you have a business licence that covers my city? Can I see it?
- Can you send me a WorkSafeBC clearance letter? It means I'm not on the hook if one of your crew is hurt on my property.
- Do you have liability insurance? Can I see the certificate?
- Can I get the quote in writing, broken down into materials and labour?
- How much is the deposit, and when are the other payments due? (Be wary of a big payment up front.)
- When can you start, and how long will the job take?
- Who will actually do the work: your own crew or subcontractors?
- Does the job need a permit, and who gets it?
- What warranty do you give, on materials and on your work? Can I have it in writing?
- Can I see photos of similar jobs you've done recently, or talk to a past customer?
- How do you leave the site at the end of each day, and when the job's done?
